This Saturday it becomes mandatory in the UK to register for an Operator ID if you own a drone that weighs more than 250g. This ID number must be clearly visible on every drone over 250g that you own. £9 annually
In addition, anyone wishing to fly a drone will also need to pass an online test and receive a Flier ID. Renewable every 3 years
You can think of it just like being a registered keeper of a vehicle (operator ID) and having a drivers licence (flier ID).
Interestingly this is not required if only flying indoors.
At Lunar we are in favour of recreational drone fliers needing to pass a formal test to help educate the general public on the safe operation of drones.
However we are not sure those wishing to smuggle contraband into prisons or disrupt airports will feel inclined to register.
